The neighboring homes are not fancy, but the people have hearts of gold and have always looked out for them over the years.Bill moseys back up to the house and can see his loving wife, Kathy fixing breakfast in the open kitchen. She waves as she sets his eggs on the breakfast bar when she sees him approaching. The family of hawks who nest in the trees on the vacant lot next door swoops through the trees also looking for their breakfast and Bill is reminded of the time he actually saw one of the monkeys who are reported to live beneath the Shands Bridge swinging through the trees. Rumor has it they escaped from Silver Springs years ago after a movie shoot. No gators in sight this morning but he sees several wild turkeys scamper off as he nears the house. Maybe the deer will visit again at sunset he hopes. He remembers planting each of the wide variety of fruit trees over the last 10 years: peach, fig, several varieties of oranges, Meyer lemons, apricot...all of them fruit-bearing. Maybe if he collects some blueberries from the patch out front, Kathy will fix him up some pancakes this morning before they head to the Azalea festival in Palatka a bit later. They have so enjoyed the quiet country life in what originally seemed like the middle of nowhere. The 20 minute drive to either Palatka or Green Cove Springs now seems like the perfect assurance that the peace offered by this idyllic setting will remain uninterrupted, even though new homes are being built right down the street as several doctors also seek to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Yes, he and Kathy will truly miss this special spot and he prays that the new owners will grow as attached to their simple but beautiful home as they have over the years.
